Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion
Fashion is arguably one of the greatest Japanese exports and is widely recognized for its innovative avant-garde approach. Its denial of the traditional western beauty standards and revolutionary rethinking of the silhouette influenced the whole post-80s generation of non-Japanese designers, many of whom regarded as classics now. Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo may not break any new ground here, in Tokyo, as it did at the Barbican Gallery where it was first shown—all designers featured in the exhibition can be seen daily throughout extensive Tokyo shopping network—however, as a homage to the unique moment in time, when everything we've known about fashion was questioned, deconstructed and sewn back together in a fresh new way, the show is definitely worth a visit. Through October 8th.
