Hiroshi Sugimoto: Five Elements
Stripped of all gimmicks, pagodas displayed at Gallery Koyanagi are the optical glass clear representation of Hiroshi Sugimoto's unclogged vision. The pagodas are based on esoteric Buddhist scriptures and consist of five geometric shapes symbolizing five essential elements—Earth (cuboid), Water (sphere), Fire (pyramid), Wind (hemisphere) and Emptiness (cintāmani, a droplet-like shape). Combined with ongoing and most celebrated “Seascapes” series, the exhibition is exemplary of the artist's quest for the pristine state of consciousness, yet untouched by culture and religion, as well as his increasing interest in sculpture and site-specific work. Through June 23d.
