Memento Mori—Eros and Thanatos
Shirokane Art Complex 5th Anniversary Exhibition, Memento Mori—Eros and Thanatos, curated by Hiroshi Sugimoto whose architectural studio occupies the top floor of the building, draws largely on the artist's own private collection. An eclectic, yet finely tuned mix of works ranges from rare antique finds and the paper-thin deer bone carvings by Masaya Hashimoto to the pseudo-sacrificial Hermann Nitsch rituals and the dreamy Tadasu Takamine video of two women trapped in an aquarium. Sugimoto's lifelong obsession with collecting and his peculiar sense of humor clearly manifest themselves on each floor of this unexpected gem of a show. Through May 18th.
