Tomoo Gokita: The Great Circus

To be placed in the midst of some of the finest examples of the 20th century modern art, the permanent collection of Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art is so rich of, is challenging for any living artist, yet, Tomoo Gokita holds his own with his first museum retrospective, “The Great Circus.”

Having started as an illustrator, Gokita knows exactly how to be most effective with the most modest means—faithful to monochrome, he keeps contrast to its utmost, making his works foolproof reproduction ready. That alone is the artist's biggest strength—his works have an immediate, album cover impact, and his biggest vulnerability—local art establishment is routinely skeptical of Gokita's artistic growth and only now comes to terms with it, after his success abroad. Through December 24th.
