Viviane Sassen: Umbra
“What men call the shadow of the body is not the shadow of the body, but is the body of the soul.”
—Oscar Wilde, A House of Pomegranates
Umbra, Latin for “shadow,” the Nederlands Fotomuseum commissioned photo series by Viviane Sassen, explores shadow as a metaphor for the human psyche. Geometry vs. nature. Logic vs. emotion. Order vs. chaos. Positive and negative swap places. Africa—the unconscious of our westernized collective mind—is a backdrop. The points of friction, where the opposites merge, are outlined by solid, pitch-black shadows.
